Does the Research Center do Patent Research?
Patent research is a specialty area, while we will assist with this type of research our results should be considered as part of a “preliminary” patent search. Usually, we use Google’s advanced patent search feature (https://patents.google.com/advanced). Our results typically give clients a sense of the terminology that appears in existing patent documents and also gives them some idea of whether to pursue a provisional patent.
The Patent and Trademark Resource Center Program manages a nationwide network of academic, public, and state libraries that have been designated a Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC). These resource centers provide the public with Trademark and Patent assistance. You can access their centers here: https://www.uspto.gov/learning-and-resources/patent-trademark-resource-centers
If you want to patent an invention or register a trademark. PTRC representatives are trained to help inventors and small businesses find the information they need to protect their intellectual property (IP).
While PTRC representatives cannot provide legal advice, they can:
- Show you how to use patent and trademark search tools
- Explain to you the application process
- Assist you in using the US Patent & Trademark Office's directory of local patent attorneys
- Offer classes on IP (varies by location)
- Help you find patent and trademark owner and assignee information
- Connect you to other USPTO resources
