What is the process for joining an Approved Vendor List (AVL) in an industry?
My client is a small manufacturer. He is seeking guidance on how to join the Approved Vendor List in his industry, either as a contractor, subcontractor, or partner.
Answer
According to the Glossary of Supply Chain Management, an Approved Vendor List is "a list of suppliers verified and approved to provide goods or services based on factors like quality, cost, and reliability." (Supply Chain Management Review). There is not an approved vendor list for an industry. Rather, individual manufacturers or other organizations create their own approved vendor lists.
There are many discussions about how to get on approved vendor lists in industry specific forums and on Reddit. These discussions have lots of industry specific advice and tips. One Reddit discussion offers this general tip: "To get on the list you need to find out how the list was created. In most cases this will be done by a purchasing department not the individual or business you are actually doing the work for. If you have someone working in the company you might be able to get the phone number for the department and the people in charge... When you call these people ask about their process for qualifying vendors and how often they refresh and reexamine their list." (r/smallbusiness".)
I hope this information helps.
